Before Arriving on Campus
Before you arrive on campus with your computer, you'll need to make sure you have everything you need to connect to the university's network and the Internet, including up-to-date antivirus software and other security updates.
Install the latest operating system updates.
These updates help keep you free of the latest computer viruses.
- Students running Microsoft Windows should visit the Microsoft website at this link Microsoft Updates.
- Students with Apple computers will need to visit the Apple site to download and install the latest security updates. The site can be found at Apple Software Updates.
Install up-to-date antivirus software on your machine.
If you don't already have antivirus software, Ohio State recommends Microsoft Security Essentials for Windows and Sophos for OSX.
Bring an Ethernet (network) cable, Cat-5 or better, even if you intend to use wireless.
You will need this cable to connect to the Internet at sometimes even if you primarily rely on wireless. These cables come in different lengths but 15 ft. lengths will work in most rooms. Cables are available at most campus bookstores, computer stores, discount stores, and large home hardware stores.
Personal routers (wired or wireless) are not permitted in the residence halls. These may create security risks and a lowered quality of internet service for residence hall students.
Bring every CD that came with your computer.
It is very important that you have your operating system CDs (labeled Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 10, Mac OSx, etc.) as well as any other software you may have purchased in case you encounter problems and your operating system needs to be reinstalled.
